What did the cemetery ad martyres look like during Augustine’s time in Milan? The key topographical details are provided by Ambrose in his letter to his sister Marcellina. The bodies of Gervasius and Protasius were buried near the memoria of the saints Nabor and Felix; their remains were transferred to the nearby Basilica Faustae, and then brought to the Ambrosian Basilica, where they would have a permanent resting place. While the Church of St. Ambrose still stands but very little of its early Christian phase remains, nothing is left of the Basilica Naboris et Felicis and of the Basilica Faustae, except for their approximate topographical locations. Other studies have addressed issues related to the origins, developments, topography, and hagiographical aspects of the cemetery ad martyres, which, between Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, became the most important devotional center in Milan. On this occasion, the focus is on the archaeological investigations conducted in recent decades that have uncovered remains of funerary structures dating to the late 4th century. These findings demonstrate that, in addition to the basilicas mentioned by Ambrose, the cemetery had a more complex architectural layout: within the relatively small area of the current Via S. Valeria, three structures have been identified that can be interpreted as Late Antique/Early Christian mausoleums.
