The memory of Augustine’s conversion, thanks to Ambrose’s sermons, gradually fostered the desire to connect these two great figures of the Church to specific physical locations. While the place of Augustine’s conversion was no longer easily identifiable, the same could not be said for the site where the tombs of Bishop Ambrose and his brothers were kept. The certainty that the baptism took place in Milan tied the event to a church near the great Basilica of the Martyrs, which also contained a well of water. Thus, a connection was formed and strengthened between the moment of the conversion of the Saint of Hippo, his immersion in the waters of the font, and the physical proximity to the place most closely associated with Bishop Ambrose. The small Church of St. Augustine in Via Lanzone in Milan preserves these living memories.
