The theme of relics is closely linked to the perpetuation of the material memories of past works as an expression of spirituality, both from a religious and historical perspective, but also from social, architectural, and artistic viewpoints. Giovanni Carbonara (1942-2023) carried out a long and consistent research journey on the theme of recognizing material testimonies in their authenticity. After a period of formative study in his youth, he identified conservation aspects within Christian Western culture as early as the 5th-6th centuries, throughout the Middle Ages, and revived after the Council of Trent, from the 16th century onward. The modern concept of restoration is based on the recognition of the value of material testimonies. In the Christian context, conservation is driven not only by functional reasons related to the survival of the material work but also by cultural reasons: not just reuse and refunctionalization, but true restoration. The essay describes the different stages of development in Giovanni Carbonara’s thought within contemporary reflection on the conservation of material memories.
