The author takes her starting point from Serm. 285 on Saints Castus and Aemilius to illustrate the Bishop Augustine’s attitude toward both the martyrs and the faithful under his pastoral care. To the latter, the Bishop of Hippo points out the right relationship to entertain with the saints and takes care to reiterate several times that what makes a martyr is not what he suffered, but the cause for which he suffered, and that it is God who gave the martyr the strength with which he faced martyrdom. Another pivotal concept, central to anti-heretical polemics, is the affirmation that the honour to be paid to martyrs must be within the Church, not outside it. Augustine – as the Confessions testify – had seen God’s direct intervention in his own personal vicissitudes, and his homelies show him to be always very careful in defining the limits and the meaning of the cult of the martyrs. Even though in his later years he placed increasing importance on the prodigies performed by their relics, he firmly maintains the distinction between the role of the saints and the power of God, in substantial continuity with the religious and intellectual experience of his conversion.
