The paper will focus on: the origin of the liber iurium in 1215 and its evolution during three centuries; the reconstruction of its original structure; how the manuscript was compiled and who were the scribes; the internal organization and the criteria for the selection of documents. The peculiar history of the Rigestum, in use – even if occasionally – until XVI century, lets us understand the evolution in the meaning and in the consideration of the book. Indeed, as years went by, it played different roles: first it was a mean of communal documents’
reservation, then a place to build civical memory and finally a symbol of that very memory, the use of which allowed the connection to an ancient tradition.
