Based on two sermons (Serm. 306 and Serm. Dolbeau 18) that discuss the martyrs of the Massa candida, the article examines how Augustine of Hippo defines Christian martyrdom in a paradoxical way. The martyr is set apart from ordinary humans by his heroism and disregard for death, which demonstrate that he alone understands what the beata vita, desired by every person, truly is. Paradoxically, Augustine reminds his audience that martyrdom is also enacted in the everyday life of each person, even in their most insignificant actions. Thus, it is not only martyrdom, but the entire Christian life, that is defined in an extremely demanding way.
