The contribution investigates the times and forms in which the varied power of the Augustinians in Pavia was strengthened: in particular, the Lombard age, starting with Liutprand, and subsequently the Visconti period, which represent the two chronological poles in which the most significant examples can be found, thanks to the very presence of the body of the Holy Father of the Church in San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro. A summary of the sectors in which this power was most strongly exercised during the indicated time frame is provided: from the political to the economic and cultural spheres. It has been possible to reconstruct a fragmentary framework, but one that accounts for the power of a monastic entity that stands as a giant in the landscape of Pavia’s monastic institutions, and beyond.
