Reliquie e reliquiari nell’Europa medievale: il caso pavese e lo pseudosarcofago di Sant’Agostino

The presence of a high number of relics in the churches of Pavia during the medieval period, and particularly in the early medieval age, can be explained by the city’s role as a capital for several centuries. This is already documented by the inventory produced in the first half of the 13th century based on the surveys of Bishop Rodobaldo Cipolla, and later by the lists compiled by Opicino de’ Canistris in his Liber de Laudibus civitatis Papie. In addition to the presence of the bodies of notable bishops who were venerated as saints, such as Siro, Invenzio, Epifanio, Ennodio, and others, the early medieval period also saw significant arrivals of relics during the time of Liutprand, including the crucial acquisition of the body of Saint Augustine. Later, under King Astolfo, following the conquest of Ravenna and the Exarchate, more relics were brought to the city. Other relics likely arrived in multiple waves during the second half of the 10th century, intended for the abbey church of San Salvatore, later known as San Felice. The present study aims to consider some artifacts intended to be used as capsae or other repositories for relics. After a brief mention of three notable late medieval examples from the church of San Francesco, the focus shifts to some artifacts from the late antique and early medieval periods, including the capsa argentea made during the time of Liutprand for the body of Augustine. In passing, the so-called pseudosarcophagus of Saint Augustine is also briefly discussed, though its dating and original function can only be conjectured.
