This paper is placed at the end of the extensive research presented in the volume Milano. Piazza Duomo prima del Duomo. It proposes a reconstruction of the space and architectural context of the Baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti, where Augustine was baptized by Ambrose (387), in light of the catechesis documented in Ambrosian writings and the material remains uncovered by archaeological research. While the steps of the Christian initiation ceremony are clearly outlined in the Ambrosian texts and confirmed by the archaeological remains, reconstructing the ceremony in detail within the surviving structures still raises some unresolved questions. One in particular concerns the presence of over two hundred coins found in the water distribution channel along the perimeter of the baptismal font. These coins, minted between the 4th and 6th centuries and in circulation for a long time, attest to a ritual offering that had already been officially banned by the Church in the 4th century, yet it is also documented in other baptismal contexts throughout the Mediterranean. It remains unclear whether this ritual, archaeologically documented in Milan during the 5th-6th century phase of the Baptistery, was tolerated by Ambrose and practiced during the time of Augustine’s baptism.
