Cristoforo da Fano (1401-1477), a humanist and a friar of the Order of Humiliati, composed a collection
of fabulae and other poems, including a 107 line Satyrula in hexameters, dedicated to Giovanni
da Sale, an important member of the town council of Brixia. The Satyrula, of which a critical edition,
Italian translation and commentary are provided, is preserved in two manuscripts: New Haven, Yale
University, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Marston 188 (1st version), the dedicatory
copy to Giovanni Barozzi, bishop of Bergamo (1449-1465), and Genova, Bibl. Universitaria, G II
17 (2nd version). The poem deals with the topic of getting married and shows a mixture of biblical,
classical and patristic sources, especially Juvenal’s Sat. VI and Jerome’s Adversus Iovinianum.
