B. Castiglione’s literary production is examined. Both tradition and attribution of his lyrics are
discussed, particularly the case of two-handed texts: the eclogue Tirsi, written in 1508 in cooperation
with his cousin Cesare Gonzaga, and the Epistle addressed to Pope Leo X by Castiglione and
his friend Raphael (1519). About The Book of the Courtier, three different matters are presented: the
chronological and thematic link between the genesis of the Book and the Epistle De Guidubaldo
Urbini Duce to King Henry VII (1508); the linguistic review of The Courtier overhauled by G.F.
Valier, before printing; and eventually two problems of interpretation, that is (i) identification of
reliable sources and (ii) restoration of the cultural context.
